Congenital ichthyosis
LABOKLIN Service ID: 8317
Ichthyosis as a genetic disease in Great Danes is characterized by severe generalized hyperkeratosis and formation of a heavily wrinkled, thickened and scaly skin especially around the eyes and nose. This type of ichthyosis is also called lamellar ichthyosis, due to the thin and superimposed lamellar cell layers of scales. The skin becomes dry and loses its elasticity, whereby the animal exhibits a wrinkled look. In addition, puppys sometimes develope a strong swelling of the eyelids, which makes it impossible for them to open their eyes. The changes in skin-properties causing the folds also enhances the risc of secondary infections, consequently treatment of the disease is hampered.
