• Cat: IGF-1 can be used for the diagnosis of suspected hypersomatotropism (acromegaly), especially if diabetes mellitus is difficult to control. Insulin deficiency can lead to a drop in IGF-1 concentration in the blood. In diabetics, IGF-1 should therefore be measured at the earliest 4–6 weeks after starting insulin treatment.
• Dog: Pituitary dwarfism – among other things, the diagnosis is based on low IGF-1 concentrations. For genetic testing on pituitary dwarfism, see Genetics/Hereditary Diseases/Dog.
