Parathormone (PTH)

LABOKLIN Service ID: 114

Diagnosis of hypercalcaemia or hypocalcaemia to clarify primary hyperparathyroidism or hypoparathyroidism

Material

Serum or EDTA plasma 1 ml (centrifuged and separated shortly after coagulation (serum) or centrifuged immediately after sampling (EP), pipetted off)

  • Please pay attention to the note – country-specific! – on the submission form regarding the temperature during storage/transport!

Method

Chemiluminescence assay (CLIA)

Species list

Dog, cat, horse, others on request

Duration

Reporting of results on the day the sample is received (Mon–Sat)

Remark

  • The concentration should be assessed together with Ca and/or ionised Ca (+ phosphate, if applicable). For dogs and cats, these and other relevant parameters can be requested via the Hypercalcaemia Profile (see for further information, see Profiles/Screenings – Small Animals)
  • Hyperparathyroidism: In case of concurrent hypercalcaemia, PTH concentrations within the reference range are already considered inadequately elevated. Secondary renal hyperparathyroidism should be ruled out.
  • Hypoparathyroidism: Characterised by low PTH concentrations with concurrent hypocalcaemia.
