CPSE is a prostate-specific enzyme and is considered a marker for prostate function in dogs. It is produced by epithelial cells in the prostate and enters the bloodstream in increased concentrations when there is increased secretory activity or tissue changes.

| Remark | - Note: Neither a rectal examination nor ejaculation should take place within 24 hours prior to sample collection, as this will lead to falsely elevated measurement results.
- If these requirements are met, elevated concentrations indicate pathological changes in the prostate. In most cases, there is benign prostatic hyperplasia. However, further diagnostic tests (ultrasound, cytology, testing for BRAF mutation or prostate biopsy) are recommended to distinguish it from prostatitis or prostate neoplasia.
