• The heat-stable isoenzyme of AP is induced by endogenous or exogenous steroid hormones (especially glucocorticoids, progesterone). It can be used to assess steroid activity, particularly if hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s syndrome) is suspected.
• This test is only useful when combined with the determination of “total AP” if the latter is elevated (“total AP” must be requested separately; see AP above). The percentage of residual activity can be calculated from “total AP” and heat-stable (steroid-induced) AP.
