Triglycerides

LABOKLIN Service ID: 25

Triglycerides are neutral fats that serve as energy storage and transporter for fatty acids. They are synthesised in the liver, small intestine and adipose tissue. Serum concentration is influenced by food intake, hormone status and metabolic state.

Material

Serum or EDTA plasma or heparin plasma 0.5 ml
(a 12-hour fasting period is recommended for omnivores and carnivores)

Method

Photometry

Duration

Reporting of results on the day the sample is received (Mon–Sat)

Remark

  • Dog: Hypertriglyceridaemia is associated with postprandial lipaemia, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, Cushing’s syndrome and acute pancreatitis, among others.
  • Cat: Hypertriglyceridaemia can be detected in diabetes mellitus, obesity and hepatic lipidosis, among others.
  • Horse: Elevated triglyceride concentrations can be found in EMS, PPID, food deprivation or inappetence; clinically relevant in hyperlipaemia and hyperlipidaemia syndromes. Triglycerides are suitable as monitoring parameters during SGLT-2 inhibitor treatment.
  • Cattle: Elevated concentrations occur in lipomobilisation syndrome in negative energy balances, especially in the peripartal period.
