Remark | - It is the most important extracellular anion and decisive for the maintenance of the osmotic balance.
- Increased values occur due to all diseases which cause hypernatremia as well. Most common causes are dehydration and hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis.
- Decreased levels occur analogously in case of diseases which cause hyponatremia, e.g. vomiting and metabolic alkalosis.
