Material

Serum 0.5 ml

Method

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)

Duration

2–3 working days

Remark

  • Manganese is an essential trace mineral and a component or activator of numerous enzymes, including superoxide dismutase.
  • It plays an important role in carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism, bone and cartilage formation, and the antioxidant protection system.
  • Manganese deficiency leads to growth disorders, bone deformation, fertility disorders and reduced glucose tolerance. In ruminants and pigs, delayed growth and fertility problems are particularly relevant.
  • An excess of manganese is rare, as any excess is mainly excreted in the bile. Very high concentrations can cause neurological signs (tremors, ataxia).
