E. coli which carry genes for the synthesis of enterotoxins or Shiga toxins (EPEC, STEC) and/or the virulence factor intimin (EPEC) can cause intestinal complaints such as diarrhoea, especially in young animals. Adult animals may shed enteropathogenic E. coli in faeces without showing any clinical signs.
