IgA is a mucosal antibody and plays a central role in the local immune defence of the respiratory system, the digestive and urogenital tracts. It is produced as secretory IgA by plasma cells in mucosal epithelium.
| Material | Serum or CSF 0.5 ml |
| Method | ELISA |
| Species list | Dog |
| Duration | 2–3 working days |
| Remark | - Steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA) is an autoimmune inflammation of the meningeal vessels, characterised by an increase in IgA in serum and cerebrospinal fluid. Elevated IgA in cerebrospinal fluid is a highly sensitive and specific marker for SRMA. Serum IgA may also be elevated, but is less specific.
- Decreased IgA concentrations occur in congenital or acquired immunodeficiency (e.g. in Shar Pei or Beagles) and result in increased susceptibility to recurrent mucosal infections.
