BNP is a hormone produced by the cardiomyocytes of the ventricles and released into the blood when the myocardium is subjected to volume and pressure overload. It has a hormonal effect on circulation and fluid balance. It increases the renal excretion of sodium and water, lowers the intracardiac pressure and has vasodilatory effects.
