Coumarin Activity

LABOKLIN Service ID: 511

Vitamin K1 is required for the formation of active clotting factors. In cases of suspected coumarin poisoning, a sufficient supply of vitamin K1 should be ensured; the serum level of vitamin K1 is determined with this test.
Vitamin K1-epoxide is the inactive form of vitamin K1. The regeneration of vitamin K1-epoxide to vitamin K1 is inhibited in the liver by coumarins. By detecting the increase in vitamin K1-epoxide in the serum using this test, the activity of coumarins in the liver can be indirectly detected. Poisoning can thus be confirmed or monitored to determine whether the toxins have already been broken down and vitamin K1 supplementation is no longer necessary.
