| Remark | - Albumin is synthesised in the liver and is the most important protein in plasma for transport and colloid osmotic pressure. It is a negative acute-phase protein, i.e. its concentration decreases during inflammatory responses.
- Hypoalbuminaemia results from loss via kidneys and intestines, through bleeding, synthesis disorders due to liver dysfunction, inflammation and a negative acute-phase reaction (mild hypoalbuminaemia).
- Hyperalbuminaemia mainly occurs as a relative increase in case of dehydration.
- Birds, reptiles, small mammals: Due to species-specific differences, serum protein electrophoresis is recommended for evaluating the protein pattern.
- For the determination of microalbumin in cerebrospinal fluid, please refer to Service ID 85; for the analysis in urine, refer to Service ID 2007 (see also the “Urinalysis” section).
