• This glycoprotein reflects the average blood glucose level of the past 3 weeks, determination therefore serves the diagnosis and the long term monitoring of patients with diabetes mellitus. A distinction between spontaneous, stress-induced hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus is possible as well. Increased levels can also be found in case of hyperproteinaemia.
• Low fructosamine levels are associated with protein deficiency or increased protein metabolism.
