swab without medium (nose or pharynx), bronchoalveolar lavage, aborted material incl. placenta, EDTA blood 0,2 ml (viremia) (detection from buffy coat is possible on request; we need at least 5 ml EB for this)

equine herpesviruses 1, 4 (EHV-1, EHV-4)

realtime PCR

Herpesviruses usually have only a short viraemic phase. Detection from EB is therefore often only useful at the beginning of the disease.
