- This test covers the third phase of coagulation, the change from fibrinogen to fibrin.
- It is recommended for monitoring the treatment with heparin or streptokinase as well as in cases of suspected disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) or intoxication with vitamin K antagonists. Temporarily lowered concentrations of fibrinogen are seen after intensive surgery as well as in cases of DIC.
- If DIC is suspected, the DIC profile may be used to confirm or disprove the diagnosis.
