ESBL Differentiation

LABOKLIN Service ID: 2218

only after prior bacteriological examination

Material

for prior bacteriological examination: swab with medium, faeces

Method

culture

Duration

3 - 4 days

Remark

  • Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteracterales such as E. coli, Klebsiella spp. and Proteus spp. are called ESBL producers. Due to the specific ß-lactamase with extended spectrum of activity, the bacteria are resistant antibiotics, both to penicillins as well as cephalosporins (also to 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporins). The property of ESBL formation is encoded on easily transferable genetic segments and can be transferred from one bacterial generation to the next during reproduction (vertical transfer) or exchanged between bacteria (horizontal transfer).
  • This test is performed in additon to the bacteriological examination.
  • Testing for ESBL is also part of the test Analysis of Multidrug-resistant Bacteria.
