Oral Glucose Test with insulin determination

equine metabolic syndrome (EMS)

serum 1 ml (cooled, preferably frozen)

fasting overnight, hay/straw can be given. In the morning
(1) 1 g/kg bdw of glucose
or
(2) 0.5 g/kg bdw of glucose per os (can be done by the animal owner)
blood sampling after 2 hours

Healthy horses stay below these cut offs:
(1) < 85 µU/ml insulin
(2) < 68 µU/ml insulin
EMS horses show higher values.
