Oral Glucose Test with insulin determination

equine metabolic syndrome (EMS)

serum 1 ml (centrifuged soon after sampling, pipetted off and at least refrigerated – preferably frozen)

fasting required, only reduced feeding of hay/straw. In the morning
(1) 1 g/kg bdw of glucose
or
(2) 0.5 g/kg bdw of glucose per os (can be done by the animal owner)
blood sample collection after 2 hours

Depending on the test, healthy horses stay below these cut offs:
(1) < 85 µU/ml insulin
(2) < 68 µU/ml insulin
EMS horses show significantly higher values.
