ACTH Stimulation Test Extended

LABOKLIN Service ID: 2141

Diagnosis

  • Suspected endocrine-active adrenal neoplasia, adrenal hyperplasia
  • Early (subdiagnostic) Cushing’s syndrome

Material

Serum 2 x 0.5 ml

Execution

  • First blood collection = baseline value
  • Injection of 5 μg ACTH/kg as Cosacthen® i.v./(i.m.)
  • Second blood collection 1 hour post ACTH injection = stimulation value

Parameter

Cortisol and 17 OH-progesterone

Method

Cortisol: Chemiluminescence assay (CLIA);
17 OH-progesterone: Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS)

Species list

Dog

Duration

Reporting of partial results (cortisol) on the day the sample is received (Mon–Sat);
Final results after 2–6 working days

Assessment

A significant increase in 17 OH-progesterone while cortisol concentrations are within reference range may indicate subdiagnostic (atypical) Cushing’s syndrome. However, it should be noted that the specificity is relatively low. Differential diagnoses should be excluded.
