• α-chloralose is an over-the-counter poison for pest control that is being used with increasing frequency. It is ingested by dogs and cats either directly or when they eat poisoned mice and rats.
• α-chloralose has a narcotic effect and impairs thermoregulation. It can lead to severe hypothermia, neurological signs, salivation, hypoglycaemia and circulatory failure and can result in death.
