Remark

  • Molybdenum is an essential trace mineral and component of important enzymes (e.g. xanthine oxidase, sulphite oxidase).
  • Molybdenum deficiency can lead to anaemia, diarrhoea and paralysis. It should be noted that molybdenum is antagonistic to copper – this is particularly relevant for cattle and sheep on molybdenum-rich or sulphur-containing soils: High molybdenum intake can lead to secondary copper deficiency in ruminants, as molybdenum binds copper with sulphur (formation of thiomolybdates). This can result in hypochromic anaemia, bone growth disorders, diarrhoea and loss of pigment in the coat.
