Ragwort (Senecionine)
LABOKLIN Service ID: 484
test for pyrrolizidine alkaloids
Senecio species, especially the well-known ragwort (Senecio jacobaea), are a common problem in grass, hay and silage, as they contain a large amount of different pyrrolizidine alkaloids as cumulative hepatotoxins.
The detection of the toxins senecionine and senecionine-N-oxide indicates the oral ingestion of toxic plant parts within the last hours to days.
