BRAF Mutation Test (V595E) (dog)

Indications:

  • It was not possible to get a reliable histological/cytological diagnosis.
  • Screening for urothelial carcinoma (transitional cell carcinoma) in certain predisposed terrier breeds (e.g. Scottish Terrier, Fox Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, West Highland White Terrier)
  • Difficult patient

Material

If urinary bladder/urethral carcinoma (transitional cell carcinoma) is suspected:

  • urinary sediment (especially early morning urine; fluid + smear)
  • aspiration cytology (smears)
  • formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue (from previous histological examination)
If prostate carcinoma is suspected:
  • smears rich in cells
  • formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue (from previous histological examination)

Remark

Detection of BRAF variant V595E.
Only a positive result is conclusive.
Reasons for negative results:

  • The urothelial (transitional cell)/prostate carcinoma is not caused by BRAF mutation (approx. 30 – 50% of these carcinomas – depending on the breed).
  • There were no mutated cells present in the sample.
  • It is not a urothelial (transitional cell)/prostate carcinoma.
The test cannot be used for cats.
