• PCR is positive in blood smears 6 to 8 days before and 3 days after the formation of morulae.
• Similar to an infection with Ehrlichia canis, persistent infections in the bone marrow, spleen and liver are considered for Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Thus, a negative PCR result does not completely rule out an infection.
