Sex Determination Snakes - PCR

LABOKLIN Service ID: 8958

Our method for sex determination is based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This allows us to reliably determine the sex of a snake using only small amounts of DNA. The test detects a specific gene sequence from the W chromosome of females, which is absent in males, who lack a W chromosome.

Material

skin (preferably fresh shed skins); EDTA blood or mucosal swabs only on request

Method

PCR

Species list

We will be pleased to provide you with information on which snake species we test.

Duration

3 days

Remark

  • Fresh shed skins must be dry and should ideally contain no residues of, for example, substrate.
  • To ensure a correct analysis, the sample must not be contaminated with foreign DNA. For this purpose, please wear gloves when taking samples or wash your hands after each sample.
  • Please pack the shed skins for each snake individually, preferably in resealable plastic bags.
  • It is important to label the samples in such a way that the animals can be clearly identified.
  • It is essential to specify the exact snake species when submitting the samples.
