  • Measurement of 5α-dihydroprogesterone (DHP), progesterone and determination of the DHP/progesterone ratio.
  • In cyclic or early pregnant mares the DHP/progesterone ratio is <1, after the luteo-placental shift around approx. day 100 to 120 of pregnancy the DHP/progesterone ratio should be > 1.
  • Confirming the luteo-placental shift helps to decide on the appropriate period for supplemental progestogenic therapy during early pregnancy in problem mares.
  • Absolute DHP values (follow-up examinations) could assess placental function in diseases (i.e. colic, fever, placentitis etc.) during advanced pregnancy.
