General information
Devrisea agamarum is a gram-positive bacterium, which can cause dermatitis and cheilitis, as well as septicaemia in lizards. Especially species of the genus Uromastyx are affected. However, other lizard species can also become infected. In the popular bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps), asymptomatic carriers are common, since Devrisea agamarum can be part of the oral microbiome. The potential of transmission to susceptible animals has to be taken into account when creating groups that are housed together. Clinical symptoms of the disease often present with yellow, scabby lesions. Outbreaks with high mortality are described, especially when septicaemia is present. The bacterium has been detected in wild as well as lizards in captivity.
