Because it is stored in the bones, lead can only be detected in higher concentrations in the blood in case of acute poisoning. Over 95% of lead in the blood is bound in erythrocytes, so as test material, whole blood is absolutely necessary. An elevated iron level in the serum is an additional indication of possible lead poisoning.
