It was first detected in Germany in early August 2026. The virus has been detected in France, Switzerland, Austria and the south and the middle of Germany and continues to spread.<\/p>\n<p>The virus is transmitted by blood-sucking midges of the genus Culicoides. So far, <strong>cattle<\/strong> have been the main animals affected. Clinical signs include fever, diarrhoea, reduced feed intake and a drop in milk yield, which may persist for up to three weeks. Based on current knowledge of SBV, infection during certain stages of pregnancy may cause foetal damage. The infection spreads rapidly within affected herds. EDTA blood should be submitted for testing from animals showing clinical signs, especially fever as the viraemia lasts 3-5 days.. Two to three animals per herd should be tested at least. The virus has also been detected in <strong>sheep<\/strong>, <strong>goats<\/strong> and an<strong> alpaca<\/strong>, although no clinical signs have been reported in these species to date (as of 1 September 2026).<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, cases of unexplained neurological disease have occurred in <strong>horses<\/strong> in Switzerland and southern Germany. Shamonda virus was detected in the brain tissue of three of these horses. In one case a high viral load was detected, suggesting a link with the clinical neurological signs. However, it has not yet been conclusively established whether the virus was responsible for the neurological signs.
