The disease first appeared in Germany in the winter of 1990\/91.<\/p>\n<p>The virus can spread very quickly by droplet infection and through the air. Late abortions around the 110<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0day of pregnancy are characteristic of the disease. Dead or weak piglets may be born.
