General information

Transmission of the protozoon hepatozoon occurs by biting and / or swallowing ticks.

Dependent on the amount of protozoa taken up, so it is discussed, the symptoms can vary - fever, lymphadenopathy, anorexia, lethargy, myositis, epileptiforme fits and massive  lesions in affected organs (spleen, liver, lung, brain).

Chronic infections usually show intermittent fever, lymphadenopathy, anaemia, diarrhoea, vomiting, muscular pain. Young or immunodeficient animals and animals with concurrent other infections seem to be more apt to develop symptoms.
