Encephalitozoon cuniculi

General information

Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a protozoon, that most often leads to inapparent infections in rabbits with excretion of the parasite via urine and faeces. Most common clinical symptoms are torticollis, opisthotonus as well as ataxia, hyperesthesia and paralysis. Diagnosis is important since the disease has zoonotic potential with different mammals including immunocompromised man being susceptible.
