It is cause by a recessive mutation that impairs cell to cell adhesion for leucocytes. Thereby, chemotaxis does not take place and granulocytes are unable to migrate to the site of the infection. The animals are unable to form pus or neutrophilia. Affected dogs develop severe infections early in life, due to a weak immune system.
