Horse: Equine Herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) - PCR

LABOKLIN Service ID: 8356

Material

swab without medium (norse or pharynx), bronchoalveolar lavage, abortion material incl. placenta, EDTA blood 0.2 ml (upon request, the detection from buffy coat is also possible, in this case, at least 5 ml EB is required), CSF

Method

realtime PCR

Duration

1 - 3 days

Remark

  • According to recent studies, it is recommended to also examine EB in parallel with the swabs/organ material.
  • Blood test only secondary and only in febrile phase. From a positive buffy coat result, the conclusion can be drawn that the horse has come in contact with herpesviruses – whether this is acute or happened longer ago can often not be interpreted. In case of young horses, a blood test can be useful.
  • If the PCR test result for EHV-1 is positive, differentiation of the EHV-1 virus variant is carried out automatically and free of charge.
  • The detection of EHV-1 and/or EHV-4 is also part of several profiles (see Profiles / Horse / PCR Profiles)
